Binnie Klein is a middle aged psychotherapist. In her memoir, Blows to the Head : How Boxing Changed my Mind, she recounts the way that she, and countless others, eliminated fear learning how to box which in turn taught her how to live. Boxing, the “elegant containment of aggression” shows our author and her readers the path to clarity achieved through physical expression without drama. For Klein, the physicality of boxing helped her to release buried memories and move forward in her own life.
Klein enters a different world, leaves her obsessions behind, and becomes “a little less cerebral”. Through the book, the reader grows along with her, learning to put our rage to use and “connect” to life. Although appearing physically unchanged, Learning to box gives Klein “a victory stored deep inside.” Like Klein, we see the value in an inner victory and agree with her - “It’s going to grow.”
